The Medici family ruled Florence and Tuscany for three centuries and so traces of them can be found everywhere in Florence with whom they had a very close relationship. For this reason I suggest you three different itineraries in which we deal with the rise of this important dinasty and the relationship between political power and art:

1) The Medici Palace – San Lorenzo Church – The Medici Chapels

This tour starts with the visit to the Medici Palace, the first dwelling place of the family. Here we can admire the precious Magi Chapel and the Baroque Room. Next we move on to the nearby Church of San Lorenzo to see Brunelleschi’s old Sacristy and the Laurentian Library designed by Michelangelo. We end the tour with the Medici Chapels, the private mausoleum of the Medici Grand Dukes, where you can admire Michelangelo’s New Sacristy and his Medici Tombs.

2) Walking tour through the main Medici places (The Medici Palace, San Lorenzo Church, The Signoria Palace- external visit) and final visit to the Palatina Gallery.

This tour starts with a walking through the places closely related to the family’s history. We discuss about the most important members of the family through the century: Cosimo the Elder, Lorenzo the Magnificent, Cosimo I, Francesco I, Ferdinando II and Cosimo III. We end our tour with a visit to the unique Palatina Gallery housed in the old main apartment of the Medici Grandukes at the Pitti Palace the final Royal Palace of the Medici.

3) The Pitti Palace: the Palatina Gallery, the Royal appartaments, the Boboli Garden

This tour focuses on the Royal Palace of the Medici family: The Pitti Palace. After an explanation in the main courtyard about the building’s history we move on to the fascinating Palatina Gallery where we admire masterpieces by Andrea del Sarto, Caravaggio, Raffaello, Tiziano and many other. From the Palatine Gallery the visit continues through the Royal Apartments. We then move outside to visit Boboli, the oldest and most magnificent Italian-style garden which lays on a hill behind the palace. We walk up the hill to reach the secluded Knight’s Garden, one of the most beautiful place from where we enjoy an amazing view over the rural outskirts of the city.
